Common information about penetrating damp

Penetrating damp, or rainwater ingress is used to describe damp that is coming through the building. Penetrating damp is normally the result of faulty brickwork, cracked rendering, roofing defects or potential abridgment of a cavity. Penetrating damp can occur at any level in the building be it ground floor or 3rd floor.

Lateral penetrating damp

Lateral penetrating damp is caused when there is a ground-level difference. This doesn’t necessarily mean a basement situation. It could just be a step down from one room to another or an outside pavement or flowerbed being higher than the damp course or floor level.

Other types of penetrating damp

Often with both these types of damp, evidence will be displayed as damp patches, salts displaced on the surface of the wall, blown plasterwork or sometimes physical running water.

Our expert surveyors at Cedar Preservation Ltd will help identify the cause of penetrating damp whilst offering practical, effective advice on the best ways to treat the problem.
