Most commonly found woodworm species:
Deathwatch beetle

Deathwatch beetle (Xestobium rufovillosum)

Chocolate brown, mottled with patches of short yellowish hairs on thorax and wing cases which have no pits. Emergence holes approximately 3mm diameter, they are almost always confined to hardwoods especially oak. The wood must be partially decayed by fungus.
Woodworm

Common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum)

Red and brown in colour. Emergence holes circular 1-2mm diameter. Attacks softwoods, European hardwoods and sapwood. Also common in plywoods using animal based glues.
